Pakistan: Textile Exports Increased By 12% In The Current Fiscal Year

According to the Statistics Bureau of Pakistan, in February this year, Pakistan's textile exports amounted to US $1.2 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 3.1% and a month on month decrease of 6.8%.

In the same month, Pakistan's basic textile exports maintained growth, with cotton yarn, cotton cloth, non cotton yarn and raw cotton increasing by 13% on a month on month basis, while high value-added products and other textiles decreased by 11% and 10% respectively. Among them, the exports of knitted garments, bedding goods, towels and ready-made clothes decreased by 10%, 7%, 11% and 15% respectively.

In the first eight months of fiscal year 2021, Pakistan's textile exports amounted to US $10 billion, up 6.6% year-on-year and 11% in rupiah terms, mainly due to the transfer of orders from India and Bangladesh to Pakistan. At the same time, the Sino US trade war also promoted Pakistan's textile exports. In the first eight months of fiscal year 2021, Pakistan's high value-added textile exports reached US $6.9 billion, a year-on-year increase of 12%.

Currently, cotton planting in Pakistan is about to begin. In recent two years, the decrease of planting area, the decrease of yield per unit area, the poor quality of cotton seeds, the changeable weather and diseases and insect pests have led to the decline of total cotton yield. Up to now, Pakistan has imported 1.52 million bales of American cotton in 2020 / 21. In addition to American and Brazilian cotton, the country also imports a small amount of Australian cotton, Central Asian cotton and West African cotton. If the bilateral trade between India and Pakistan can be restored, Pakistan still has room to import Indian cotton.
