Researchers at University of California at San Diego are developing an intelligent fabric that helps wearers maintain a comfortable body temperature.

Their aim is: reduce the right.

Air conditioner

Dependence.

According to the US Department of energy data,

U.S.A

5% of the electricity generated is used in air conditioners.

This is not only reflected in the US national grid, which needs billions of dollars of electricity generation, but also needs to emit billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the air every year.

In other countries, such as India, the total energy consumption generated by air conditioners is expected to climb by an order of magnitude in the next ten years.

Although we can help reduce energy consumption and reduce pollution by developing more energy efficient air conditioners and building green homes and offices, in the long run, finding ways to find a life and work without air-conditioning is likely to have greater influence.

To achieve this ambitious goal, the Department of energy's ARPA-E has been funding a number of initiatives, including one called

ATTACH

Projects (adaptive textile technology and dynamic cooling and heating).

This is a three year project, led by Joseph Wang, Professor of Nano Engineering at University of California at San Diego. Its goal is to develop a private and wearable heating and cooling technology for office workers, thereby reducing the energy consumption of building HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning).

Different from other advanced ones.

Fabric

The purpose of the technology is to design for people working outdoors (in very cold climates or very hot climates). The temperature range of ATTACH is designed from 19 to 26 C.

Clothing using this technology can help users reduce usage in some cases, or even without using HVAC.

According to ATTACH team member Renkun Chen, "the goal of the project is to achieve skin comfort temperature of 93 degrees Fahrenheit (about 33 degrees Celsius)."

The technology being developed is based on adaptive textiles, which automatically increase or decrease their adiabatic values (porosity and thickness) when ambient temperature is lowered or increased.

Part of the mechanism will be purely passive, and will not consume electricity at all.

In addition, the team plans to add integrated heating elements and cooling components, using printed thermoelectric devices and batteries.

It is also reported that their team is looking for different ways of driving dynamic components.

There is a flexible biofuel cell, and sweat is the source of fuel cells.

ATTACH is still in the initial stage of development, and different teams are in charge of different components.

If everything goes according to plan, these components are expected to be integrated into a single wearable in 3 years.

Spin

Then we can say goodbye to the air conditioner.
