Nantong In this treasure land of geomantic omen nurtured by the river and sea, there are nearly a thousand years of cotton planting history and textile tradition, blue printed cloth, embroidery, tie dyeing, tapestry and many other traditional folk fiber skills, the birth of the first textile mill and the first textile school in modern China, and the opening of a century of unique fiber industry civilization. Nantong is the host of this biennial exhibition with the theme of "return and transcendence", It is not only the "centennial return" of Chinese fiber art and national fiber enterprises, but also the "opening of the century" of a new chapter in the industrialization, nationalization and internationalization of Chinese fiber art.

Fiber art is an ancient and avant-garde art form originating from weaving. Artists integrate creative inspiration into fiber materials, and express unique visual beauty and tactile beauty through different material applications, structural techniques, color rendering and other techniques. "From Lausanne to Beijing" International Fiber Art Biennale is inherited from the famous "Switzerland Lausanne International Tapestry Biennale". The Lausanne Biennale held 15 sessions from 1962 to 1995, and was closed in 1996. In 2000, Professor Lin Lecheng, Chairman of the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University and the Fiber Art Committee of the Chinese Arts and Crafts Society, brought this flame from Lausanne, Switzerland, to Beijing, China, and began "creative continuation". As of 2010, the Biennale has been held in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Zhengzhou for six times.

As an important part of contemporary international fiber art exhibition The event, "From Lausanne to Beijing", with its unique mode of specialization, scale and internationalization, provides a stage for artists, theorists and educators around the world who are interested in fiber art research and creation to display their talents. Artists and designers from murals, sculptures, photography, clothing design, dyeing and weaving art, environmental art and many other kinds of paintings and professions work together to forge ahead with each other. They use various fiber materials as creative media, and display fiber art works in different forms such as plane, three-dimensional, and installation, For tens of thousands of audiences, it has offered a feast of visual and spiritual art.

Professor Lin Lecheng, the curator of this Biennale and attending the press conference this afternoon, said that during the preparation of the Biennale in Nantong, he was most moved. These moves are not only the "visible and tangible history" brought by the well preserved industrial historical relics, but also friendly consultants, judges, staff and enthusiastic Nantong citizens. It was these feelings that finally helped them determine the theme of this Biennale - "Return and Transcendence". The exhibition in Nantong, a city with a unique position in China's modern industrial history, has unique characteristics both in space and academia. This is a very good opportunity for dialogue between art and history.

Professor Lin Lecheng said affectionately at the press conference:“ fiber art It is perceptible and touchable, because its media is derived from hemp, cotton, etc. in our daily necessities, which is very affinity; At the same time, its forms of expression are artistic and diverse. So it can be said that fiber art is both ancient and young; Both traditional and modern; It is both elegant and popular. It is the art of real life. This work has high artistic appreciation value in terms of material selection, artistic expression and theme expression. ”Professor Lin Lecheng firmly believes that this Biennale will be welcomed by Nantong people.

This Biennial Exhibition is hosted by the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University, Nantong Municipal People's Government, the Fiber Art Professional Committee of China Arts and Crafts Association, and undertaken by Nantong State owned Real Estate Group. The event will be held from November 8 to December 15, 2012. A total of 301 works of more than 300 artists from 37 countries and regions were selected for the exhibition; Among them, 127 works were evaluated abroad; 139 domestic works will be evaluated by expert judges through two rounds of evaluation, from which the award-winning works will be determined.
