Toy Safety Standards

Recently, the international organization for Standardization (ISO) released two new standards in the ISO 8124 toy safety standards series designed to reduce the risk of injury to children due to unsafe equipment or hazardous substances. The two criteria are:

1, ISO 8124-4:2010 "Toy Safety - fourth parts: swing, slide and similar indoor and outdoor activities toys".

2, ISO 8124-3:2010 " Toys Security - the third part: migration of specific elements.

ISO 8124-4:2010 standard puts forward requirements and test methods for swings, slides and many other sports toys to ensure the fun and safety of games. This standard applies to indoor and outdoor activities toys for children under 14 years old.

The improvement of the new version of the ISO 8124-3:2010 standard aims to minimize the potential harmful substances of children due to swallowing toys by reducing the risk of hazardous substances. The standard specifies the highest acceptable concentration levels of hazardous substances (such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and other materials found in toys), as well as sampling and extraction methods for analysis. Toy materials include coatings printing Ink, plastic, cardboard, textiles, glass and ceramics. ISO 8124-3:2010 replaced the previous 1997 edition standard.

ISO Technical Committee ISO /TC 181 (toy safety) has also updated and improved the first two parts of this series of standards: in 2009, first parts were updated: safety related to mechanical and physical properties; and the second part was updated in 2007: flammability.

The chairman of the ISO Technical Committee said that it is expected that the ISO 8124 series will expand in the near future and add three new parts:

1. The total content of certain elements in toy materials

2. Determination of o-phenyl two formic acid plasticizers in plasticized materials

3. Finger paint.
