The founding of new China 60th anniversary, the health of the Chinese people has improved significantly.

Chen Zhu, Minister of health, said that since the founding of new China 60 years ago, especially since the reform and opening up, remarkable achievements have been made in medical and health services in China. The medical and health service system covering urban and rural areas has basically taken shape, and the ability of disease prevention and control has been constantly enhanced. The population covered by medical insurance has gradually expanded, and the level of health and science and technology has improved rapidly.

At present, the health level of the people is obviously improved, and the main health indicators of residents are at the forefront of developing countries.


The health level of urban and rural residents has improved, and the infant mortality rate has dropped to 14.9 per thousand.


Chen Zhu said: at present, the average life expectancy of residents in China is 73 years old, which has been greatly improved compared with 35 years before the founding of the people's Republic of China. The national maternal mortality rate has dropped from 1500/10 million at the beginning of the founding to 34.2/10 million in 2008, and the infant mortality rate has dropped from 200 per cent in the early years of the founding of the PRC to 14.9 per thousand in 2008, ranking the highest in developing countries.


In the past 60 years, through the vigorous patriotic campaign, the implementation of the national immunization program and the prevention and control of major diseases, the major infectious diseases seriously threatening the health of the population have been effectively controlled. The incidence of class A and B infectious diseases in the whole country has dropped from 20000/10 million in 1949 to 268.01/10 million in 2008.

China has successfully eradicated smallpox and filariasis, achieved the goal of polio free, eliminated the stage of iodine deficiency disorders as a whole, and effectively controlled diseases such as leprosy, schistosomiasis, malaria, which once threatened people's health seriously.

Tuberculosis, AIDS, hepatitis B and other prevention and control work has achieved significant results.

The epidemic trend of endemic diseases has been effectively curbed, and the results of prevention and control have been developing steadily.

The effectiveness of prevention and control of chronic non communicable diseases is remarkable.


At the end of 2008, China had 278 thousand health institutions.


At the beginning of the founding of the people's Republic of China, there were only 3670 medical and health institutions in the country, 84 thousand and 600 medical beds and 505 thousand health technicians.

At that time, medical institutions and medical personnel basically concentrated in towns and cities. Medical equipment was extremely crude, and the level of medical technology was low. The masses, especially farmers, lacked medical care and medicine, and could not receive basic medical and health care.


After 60 years of construction and development, China's medical and health undertakings have made considerable progress.

By the end of 2008, there were 278 thousand health organizations in China and 613 thousand village clinics. The health service system covering urban and rural residents has been basically established. The total number of beds in hospitals in the country is 4 million 36 thousand, the number of beds in hospitals in 1000 hospitals is 2.83, the number of health personnel in the country is 6 million 169 thousand, the number of rural doctors and health workers reaches 938 thousand, and the number of health professionals in each country is 3.8.
